Helping Hands

We are currently raising funds to provide a living memorial in the form of adult disabled support, with such a shortage of therapy for those with physical and mental disability we plan to help and provide extra therapy in memory of all who served and fell, both service and civilian, we remember all who fell in WW2 and all campaigns past and present.

Rebound therapy, simple and easy to provide, our aim to provide this and hydrotherapy, sadly in short supply in our area along with support for carers. Keep everyone healthy and happy!

A music, movement and theatre club has been formed, if you are able to move a finger your in, our Carers group meets each month at the St Budeaux Methodist Hall, always on the last Wednesday and at noon, we feel this is a good way to provide a living memorial.

Also we hope to take people to visits to military bases and ships, this was a popular pastime in years past. We visited the US Bases in the UK, British, French and US Ships, this is great therapy for the disabled, I think the guys found something also.

A CZECH SPITFIRE FROM HARROWBEER TAKES OFF PROTECTING PLYMOUTH!

Some years ago the late and great Bob Hope, on hearing of our plans for a long overdue US Naval Memorial at the site of the old Vicarage Road Naval Camp, and hearing of the history of Victoria Road and Normandy Way with links to Drake, John Chard, the first Governor of Maine and thousands of US Soldiers and Sailors felt it should become a friendship mile.

This we plan, we will build the garden near the old flagstaff near the Tamar Bridge, a garden with a peace mound at the centre formed from pebbles and stone from around the world, around that memorials to the people less we forget.

At present the original ARP post is still standing in Normandy Way, perhaps we could save this to provide a small museum.

We need donations of stones and pebbles for the centre of the garden, also donations are welcome for the project, if you prefer the donation can go either to the Disabled Project or the Garden. Cheques made payable to Plymouth Helping Hands, please send to the Secretary C/O 10 Bickham Rd, St Budeaux, Plymouth.   PL5 1SA. TEL: 01752 364859. Stones can be sent to the same address.

THIS IS THE SITE OF THE GARDEN IN 1944, THEN THE USN VICARAGE ROAD CAMP. AFTER D-DAY THE WOUNDED WERE BROUGHT BACK THROUGH HERE, AFTER THE WAR THE ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY MOVED IN.
